Higher teacher pay (linked to accountability) has been put forward as one of the ways of attracting and retaining high-quality teachers, but direct evidence of whether higher teacher pay results in improved student outcomes has been sparse. Illinois offers a unique opportunity to examine the effect of teacher pay on student performance at the district level for two reasons: (a) some districts are split districts encompassing either elementary and middle schools or high schools only; and (b) salaries differ significantly by district type. This paper uses data on Illinois districts from 1995-1998 to explore differences in teacher pay and to examine the effect of teacher pay on district test scores, controlling for other district student and teacher characteristics. The results, while based on exploratory analyses, should be of interest to education researchers and policymakers at the national, state, and local levels who are struggling with issues of teacher quality and improving learning for all students. drafts and provided helpful comments on methodology and substance. No Evidence That Incentive Pay for Teacher Teams Improves Student Outcomes: Results from a Randomized Trial
In recent years, education policymakers have shown growing interest in the potential of incentive pay for teachers as a way to improve student performance. Champions of this approach contend that incentive pay based on student performance can motivate teachers to improve their teaching practices, which in turn will boost student achievement; in addition, over the longer term, rewarding quality ...

Teacher compensation schemes are often criticized for lacking a performance-based component. Proponents argue that teacher incentive pay can raise student achievement and stimulate systemwide innovation. We examine a group-based teacher incentive scheme implemented in New York City and investigate whether specific features of the program contributed to its ineffectiveness. Although overall the ...
متن کاملPay by Design: Teacher Performance Pay Design and the Distribution of Student Achievement
We present results of a randomized trial testing alternative approaches of mapping student achievement into rewards for teachers. Teachers in 216 schools in western China were assigned to performance pay schemes where teacher performance was assessed by one of three different methods. We find that teachers offered “pay-for-percentile” incentives (Barlevy and Neal 2012) outperform teachers offer...
